Linear’s residential gate openers - the LRA series, the LD series, and older LSO and APeX models - all mount to the same reality: steel gates that flex, rust, and fatigue. What matters is the bracket set, the hinge design, and the condition of the gate frame itself.
The compatibility gotcha with Linear systems is the mounting arm. Linear uses a specific clevis-pin geometry on its actuator arms, and aftermarket universal brackets often don’t match the pin diameter or the throw distance. If someone welds a universal bracket on without checking the Linear arm’s pin-to-pin measurement, the gate binds mid-travel or the arm pops off the pin under load. We measure the arm before any bracket fabrication. On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question for Linear: the OEM brackets are cast steel and fine for standard installs, but when a gate has sagged or the pier has shifted, a fabricated 1/4-inch steel plate with slotted mounts is often the better long-term fix than trying to make the stock bracket work.
Identification is straightforward. The Linear model is printed on the side of the motor housing and on the control board. The gate measurements that matter for fabrication are the gate’s total weight, the hinge offset, and the distance from the hinge post to the opener mount. We take those on site, not over the phone.
Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- The gate scrapes or drags at the latch end. This is a sagging frame, usually from a hinge weld that’s stretched or a top rail that’s rusted thin. The Linear motor keeps pushing, but the geometry is off, and the strain is eating the gearbox.
- The opener arm jerks or pops during travel. A bracket weld has cracked or the pin hole has elongated. The arm moves in a slightly different arc than the gate does, and every cycle works the crack wider.
- You can see daylight through a weld seam. Once a seam cracks through, the gate loses torsional stiffness and starts twisting. The Linear unit compensates with more force, which usually burns up the motor or bends the arm.
- The gate post leans or the gate swings past its normal stop. The post base or the hinge block has failed. This is structural, not electronic, and no opener adjustment fixes it. The post needs re-setting or the hinge needs rebuilding.
- Rust escala a finger-sized chip or hole in the gate frame. Venice’s salt air does this to mild steel in under a decade. Once the frame loses material, stress concentrates at the rust line and the next weld - or the factory weld right beside it - cracks.

DIY or Call Us?

Welding on a gate that’s connected to a Linear opener is not a DIY job, and we’ll say why plainly. The gate is under spring tension and motor load even when the opener is disengaged. A gate that weighs 300 to 600 pounds stores enough energy to crush a hand or worse if a hinge lets go during the work. Welding on a gate with the opener still connected can also send current through the control board and fry it.
What you can safely do before calling: photograph the crack or the rust, note which way the gate leans, and watch one full cycle to see where the movement is worst.
