The compatibility gotcha on DoorKing is the control board revision: a 1812-080 board is not a drop-in swap for a 1812-081 board, and wiring a card reader to the wrong terminal block on the older revision can smoke the reader in about ten seconds. We always verify the exact board revision before ordering anything.

OEM DoorKing parts are easy to find. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist for keypads, transformers, and cabinet enclosures, but we won’t put an aftermarket control board into a DoorKing system unless the OEM part is discontinued. The firmware behavior differences are real, and a board that mostly works is not something we’ll leave on your gate. If the part number is still on the cabinet label, you’re already ahead. If it’s sun-bleached off, we identify it from the system’s wiring configuration and operator serial number.

Quick identification guide:

• Telephone entry systems: Model number is on a label inside the cabinet, behind the keypad face plate.
• Card readers: Pull the reader face off its backplate; the model number is molded into the housing.
• Operator boards: The board itself has a white silkscreen revision code near the main wiring harness plug.
• Remote keypads (RE series): The number is on the back of the keypad, usually worn flat after seven or eight years of sun.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing

• The intercom buzzes but the gate won’t open. This usually means the relay on the control board has failed. The board still sends a buzz signal (that’s a separate circuit), but the relay contacts that activate the gate operator are pitted or burned. Fix is a board swap, not a relay rebuild.
• Keypad codes only work on three or four buttons. Sun exposure near the coast eats the carbon pad contacts inside the keypad. The buttons with heavy use fail first: the code you enter most often, usually the one your kids use. A new keypad face plate fixes it; a new board doesn’t.
• Card reader beeps for visitors but not for you. Reader beeping with no unlock usually points to a dying proximity antenna coil or a controller board that’s resetting. We meter the reader output at the terminal block to tell the difference. Before that, we ask if any new metal was installed near the reader: a steel planter box six inches away can detune a reader’s antenna.
• The system works during the day but not at night. Here’s the Southern California humidity twist. Salt air corrosion can cause a thermal expansion fault that opens only after the unit cools down. It’s not supernatural; it’s a cracked solder joint on the board that tests fine when warm and fails when cold.
• Telephone entry calls through but audio is unintelligible. A failing speaker in the entry cabinet, or the telephone interface board if the audio only distorts on incoming calls. Ten minutes to diagnose and about forty minutes to replace.

The incoming power side of DoorKing equipment runs at 120V AC behind the cabinet, and a service error with the incoming AC can stop your heart, not just your gate. We don’t hand out step-by-step directions for board-level work, and we’d flat tell you not to do it yourself.
