BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Venice Owner’s Guide
BFT hinge and roller replacement in Venice typically runs $240 to $480 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping a single worn roller assembly or rebuilding both hinge points. We carry BFT-compatible hinge and roller hardware on the truck, and most single-gate jobs are done in under two hours. The usual discovery is blunt: the gate started dragging, squealing, or sagging enough to catch on the driveway, and the motor now strains against a hinge that gave up long before anyone noticed.
We’re an independent gate repair company, not a BFT dealer or affiliate. That matters here because we’ll match the part to the gate in front of us, not to a catalog number we’d prefer to sell you.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
Most BFT residential slide and swing gate systems use the same hinge-and-roller logic: a steel or aluminum gate leaf carried on a track or post, with the hinge absorbing the gate’s entire weight plus the push and pull of the operator. The exact hinge and roller spec depends on the model line and the gate’s weight rating.
For BFT swing operators like the Phobos, Deimos, and Rigel series, the hinge failure is usually at the post mount or the gate leaf attachment. For BFT slide systems like the Bifur, Ares, and Thalia lines, the rollers and guide wheels carry the load, and a seized roller will make the motor work against dead weight until the gear strips or the board faults out.
The compatibility gotcha: BFT doesn’t make a universal hinge. The bolt pattern, pin diameter, and load rating vary between the lighter residential kits and the heavier commercial-rated versions. If the gate’s data plate is still legible, photograph it before calling us. If it’s gone, we measure the pin diameter and bolt spacing on site and match it from there.
We’ll always offer the OEM BFT part first if it’s available and the gate is still under any kind of product warranty. When the OEM part is on backorder or the gate is old enough that the OEM markup doesn’t make sense, we’ll quote a quality aftermarket equivalent that matches the load rating and dimensions. The decision is documented on the written estimate, either way.
Signs Your BFT Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

- Gate sags toward the latch side. The top hinge is carrying more weight than the bottom, usually because the bottom hinge pin or roller has worn oval. The gate still works, but the motor’s current draw climbs every week until the control board faults.
- Squeal or groan during travel that doesn’t go away. A dry roller bearing or a hinge pin without grease makes noise long before it seizes entirely. Once it seizes, the gate stops mid-travel and the operator either faults or strips a gear.
- Visible play when you rock the gate by hand. Grip the gate mid-leaf and push it side to side. More than a quarter inch of movement at the hinge means the pin or bushing is worn out, not just loose hardware. Tightening the bolts won’t fix wear; it just delays the rebuild.
- Scrape marks or a clean line worn into the track. When a slide-gate roller fails, the wheel stops turning and the gate drags the flat contact point along the track. The wear pattern is a flat spot on the roller and a polished line on the track itself.
- Motor runs but gate barely moves, or trips the breaker. By the time the BFT operator’s thermal protection kicks in or the board logs an overload, the hinge or roller has usually been failing for months. The operator is the last part to notice.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the flat breakdown for BFT hinge and roller work in Venice:
- Single hinge rebuild (post or leaf side): $110 to $190 installed
- Single roller or guide wheel replacement: $140 to $220 installed
- Full hinge pair replacement (both hinges, both pins): $240 to $390 installed
- Slide gate roller set (both rollers, guide wheels checked and cleaned): $280 to $480 installed
Parts are itemized on the written estimate and labor is flat, not hourly. The price you approve before we start is the price on the invoice when we finish. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair isn’t right within a year, we make it right at no additional charge.
We also leave you a photo record: the old hinge or roller we pulled off, the new part installed, and the gate operating after the swap. You shouldn’t have to take our word for what got replaced.
DIY or Call Us?

A 400-pound gate under motor tension is not the place to learn hinge work. Even with the operator disengaged, the gate leaf can shift unexpectedly once a hinge pin is pulled. In Venice, the older wooden-frame gates on the walk streets are often carrying stucco or steel cladding that pushes the weight well past what the original hinges were spec’d for, and no YouTube tutorial accounts for that particular surprise. If the gate has a spring or a counterweight, we’d call a trained tech without hesitation. This is one of those repairs where the right tool and a second person actually matter.
What you can safely do is identify the problem and take measurements. Find the data plate, check the bolt spacing, note whether the roller is flat-spotted. Then call (213) 267-6777 and read us what you found. We’ll name the likely repair and the price range over the phone, and the written estimate is free.
FAQs
In Venice’s salt air and marine fog, a hinge or roller set on a gate that gets daily use typically lasts 5 to 8 years before the pin or bearing wears enough to matter. Gates closer to the canals tend to run shorter because the air’s harder on the metal. We’ve swapped rollers on three-year-old installations within a block of the water.
Sometimes. If the hinge body is intact and only the pin and bushing are worn, we can re-pin and re-bush on site for less than a full replacement. If the bolt holes have wallowed out or the leaf itself is cracked at the attachment point, the hinge has to be replaced and the gate leaf might need a weld or a backing plate. Call (213) 267-6777 and we’ll tell you which one you’re looking at.
Most single hinge or roller replacements take under two hours on site. A full hinge pair on a heavier gate, where we’re lifting and re-shimming the leaf, runs three to four hours. We’ll tell you the time window on the written estimate before the work starts.
We carry common BFT-compatible hinge pins, bushings, and roller assemblies on our Venice service trucks. When the part you need is an oddball size or a new production run, we order it and schedule the install once it’s in hand; you’ll know which path applies before we leave the estimate.
If your BFT gate is dragging, sagging, or making a noise it didn’t make last month, call (213) 267-6777. Adrian Vance and the crew will tell you what it’s doing wrong and what it costs to make it right. Written price before we start. Photo record when we leave.
