Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Venice Owner’s Guide

Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair in Venice typically runs $145-$285 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad, the intercom board, or both. We keep Ghost Controls-compatible keypads, wiring harnesses, and intercom modules on the truck, so most Venice calls are completed same-visit. You’ll usually notice the failure in one of two ways: the keypad stops waking the gate after you enter your PIN, or the intercom rings through but the audio is so distorted you can’t understand a word the person at the gate is saying.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Ghost Controls, and we stock parts for Mighty Mule, DoorKing, LiftMaster, and the rest of the eight brands we service. If your Ghost Controls unit is a few years old and it’s exposed to Venice salt air, the failure is usually corrosion at the terminal block or a dead lithium cell on the keypad board, not a failed control board. Adrian Vance has been working on Ghost Controls equipment since the company’s original gate opener line, and the pattern he sees in Venice is consistent: keypads fail first, intercoms second, and both fail faster within a mile of the ocean.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls runs two keypad lineups that matter here: the AXWR (wireless keypad, model numbers ending in -2 or -3) and the TSS1/TDS2 series, which pair with the original gate opener control boards. The intercom side is either a standalone Ghost Controls visitor call station or a third-party intercom wired into the Ghost Controls opener’s accessory input. If you can’t find a model label, look at the keypad backplate: AXWR keypads have a slide-up battery tray and a red programming button; TSS1 keypads have a single-piece sealed face with no removable tray.

The compatibility gotcha we see in Venice regularly: AXWR keypads shipped before 2019 use a 318MHz radio, and the newer AXWR-3 uses a different rolling-code handshake. You can’t mix them. If you bought a used keypad or moved it from an old house, it may physically look identical and still never pair. We check the radio frequency on site before quoting a replacement, so you’re not paying for a part that was never going to work.

OEM-versus-aftermarket: Ghost Controls branded keypads are the safe default, and quality aftermarket equivalents (the Chamberlain-family wireless keypads that share the same protocol stack) can work, but we don’t install them unless the OEM part is discontinued. The aftermarket boards use thinner gold plating on the contacts, and in Venice’s marine layer, that means a two-year lifespan instead of five.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
  • Keypad lights but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is broadcasting, but the receiver on the Ghost Controls board isn’t hearing it. This is usually a pairing loss after a power blink, or a weak battery that still powers the LED but not the radio. We’ve seen Venice homes where a gate works from the car remote but not the keypad, and it’s almost always the keypad battery fading under load.
  • Keypad is dead: no light, no response, no beep. The most common cause is corrosion on the battery terminals, especially within a mile of the canals. Salt air creeps through the battery compartment seal and eats the contacts. Sometimes a contact scrub fixes it; sometimes the board is already compromised and it’s replacement time.
  • Intercom buzzes on the call button but speech is garbled or one-way. That’s the classic symptom of a failing electrolytic capacitor in the intercom’s audio amplifier stage. The unit powers on, so it looks fine, but the audio section is half-alive. We saw this on a Windward Avenue property where the intercom had worked for five years and failed within six weeks of a marine-layer-heavy spring.
  • Keypad works only when pressed hard or at a specific angle. The tactile dome switches under the keypad face have collapsed or corroded. You can press through it for a few more weeks, but once the switch membrane starts going, it doesn’t recover.
  • Intercom rings the house phone but the gate release doesn’t trigger. On Ghost Controls boards, the intercom’s relay output connects to the opener’s accessory input. If the relay welds or the wiring corrodes at the spade terminals, the phone rings, you answer, and the gate still won’t move. This one is almost always the relay or the wiring, not the board.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Venice, a Ghost Controls keypad replacement runs $145-$215 installed, and an intercom board or call-station replacement runs $185-$285 installed, including the part and the labor to mount, wire, pair, and test it. If we’re doing both at the same visit, most jobs land between $270 and $420. The range comes down to which keypad series you have, whether the intercom needs a new wiring run, and how much rust remediation the existing mounting surface needs.

Here’s the line-item breakdown, so the math is visible:

  • Ghost Controls AXWR keypad, installed: $145-$195
  • Ghost Controls TSS1 keypad, installed: $165-$215
  • Intercom call-station board repair, installed: $185-$285
  • Both keypad and intercom, same visit: $270-$420

Before we start any work, you get a written price, per Haven Standard Clause 1. The price we quote is the price you pay: no surprise fees, no “we discovered more while we were in there.” If we open the keypad and find the damage extends to the opener board itself, we stop, photograph what we found, and show you the evidence before recommending a new scope. Every replacement is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Keypads and intercoms are on the low-voltage end of the gate system, so the risk of shock is low, but the risk of wasted money is real. You can safely check two things: the keypad battery (a $3 lithium cell) and the intercom’s power light. If the keypad wakes on a new battery, you’ve solved it for the cost of a battery. If it doesn’t, or if the intercom is buzzing with no audio, you’re looking at board-level work that’s better handled by someone with a meter and spare boards on the truck.

The part where DIY goes wrong: buying a keypad online, spending forty-five minutes pairing it, and then learning you bought the wrong frequency version or a used unit that’s already paired to someone else’s opener. We’ve met a few Venice homeowners who did exactly that before they called us. If you want to avoid the back-and-forth, call (213) 267-6777 and we’ll match the right part to your Ghost Controls model at your property, before any tools come out.
