The operator itself rarely needs welding; what needs it is the metal around it: gate leaf frames, hinge mounts, post brackets, and the arm-to-gate attachment plates that FAAC ships as cast or stamped components.

The compatibility gotcha with FAAC specifically is the arm bracket. FAAC’s articulating-arm and hydraulic operators use a slotted mounting plate with a specific bolt pattern, and the replacement brackets are not universal. If you have an S700H on a heavy steel gate, the bracket takes more torque than a 750-series bracket mounted to a lighter aluminum frame. Before we weld or fabricate anything, we measure bolt centers, plate thickness, and leaf weight, then match the bracket to the operator model rather than guessing on site. OEM FAAC brackets are well made, but for a gate leaf that’s been repaired once already, a fabricated steel gusset plate often outlasts a second OEM replacement because we can oversize the weld area where the original part was stressed thin.

We also keep some aftermarket steel hinge assemblies on hand that accept FAAC’s standard post-mount geometry, though we’ll tell you honestly when the OEM part is the better call. With the 770 and 844 hydraulic models especially, the operator arm pivots through a fixed arc, and a hinge that sits even five millimeters out of position translates to a visible wobble at the far end of the leaf.

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate leaf sags visibly at the latch side. The top hinge has wallowed out, or the hinge weld to the post is fatiguing. In Venice’s salt air, this usually starts as surface rust at the weld toe, then progresses to a crack that opens and closes with every cycle.
• The FAAC operator throws an obstacle-detection fault on a clear path. The leaf is no longer traveling in a straight plane, so the motor’s current draw spikes as it fights the bind. The operator thinks it hit something; what it hit was a bent or dragging hinge.
• You hear a metal-on-metal groan when the gate moves. That’s steel galling against steel, typically a hinge pin that lost its bushing or a post bracket that shifted. It’s a wear pattern we see on gates that survived multiple coastal winters without lubrication.
• The gate shakes or shudders when it starts and stops. Loose or cracked frame sections flex under load, and that flexing misaligns the FAAC limit cams over time. We find cracked welds at the mid-rail joints most often on older welded-steel gates.
• The operator arm scrapes or binds against the gate frame. The bracket’s position has shifted, often because a mounting bolt hole has elongated or a weld has hairline-cracked. Left uncorrected, it will deform the arm and damage the operator’s internal gear mesh.
